S.Dillon Ripley, then-Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, asked former Life magazine editor Edward K. Thompson to create a journal “on matters in which the Smithsonian [Institution] is interested, might be interested, or ought to be interested.”

Thompson was replaced by Don Moser, who had previously worked at Life, in 1980, and circulation grew to over two million before being replaced by Carey Winfrey in 2001.
